New Version 5.2.
Adds craftable whistles to 7 Days that allow you to summon a permanent animal companion to join and protect you on your adventures. You can craft any whistle at a workbench or buy them from traders. Once you have a whistle put it in your tool bar and use the action key to summon your companion.
Animals Available:
– Dire Wolf
– Grizzly Bear
– Coyote
– Snake
– Vulture
– Bunny
– Doe
– Stag
– Mountain Lion
Animal companions follow within a certain distance of you and will teleport to you if they are too far away from you. They will auto-attack zombies and consume their corpses, with a priority on following you. You can use the whistle as a way to spawn your companion in front of you if they are too far away.

[UPDATE 10-14-2025] Thank you to everyone who has viewed and downloaded the mod, especially those of you who liked or left a comment. I was not expecting such a positive response from the community and I sincerely appreciate everyone’s feedback and support.
This update comes with some major changes:
- MULTIPLAYER ENABLED – This update makes the mod work with multiplayer! ALL players on the server are now able to summon their own animal companions.
- De-spawn Enabled – You can now de-spawn your Animal Companions by holding “E”. Resummon them anytime with their whistle. (Essential for flying the gyrocopter!)
- No more saddle – The saddle requirement in order to ride companions that are ridable has been removed. You can simply hit “V” to ride.
- Zombie’s won’t ignore your companion’s strength – When your animal companion attacks a zombie, they will no longer ignore your animal. Instead, they will turn around and attack back.
- NEW Animal Items – Whistle crafting now requires new animal items that drop from hunted animals. For example, crafting the bunny whistle now requires a “rabbits foot” item which now drops when bunnies are hunted. Whistles are still available for purchase at traders as an alternative to crafting.

Hey everyone! Thank you for all of the feedback and bug reports, please keep them coming. I’ve made a number of fixes to some of the most pressing issues:
- You no longer need a saddle to ride companions: Dire Wolves, Bears, and Stags can all be mounted directly with “V”
- Animal Companions are generally quieter and won’t call out nearly as often
- The Dire Wolf companion now rides as smoothly as the bear or stag
- Animal Companions can now be unsummoned! Just hold down “E” to unsummon your companion and recall them at any time by using their whistle. This is intended to solve several issues including helicopter travel – be sure to secure your companion before taking off
- Whistle crafting now requires one special ingredient which has a chance of dropping from each animal (i.e. Bear Claws, Dire Wolf Fang, etc)

This mod is not working for me as well. I checked f1 and I get an error in regards to –modname/ModInfo.xml. There was someone else in the comments who added it in the folder. I was wondering if someone can dumb it down for me and explain how to do that. lol thanks
Hi there, thanks again for your mod, but it’s really not optimized yet. The companion has trouble following us, it lacks fluidity, sometimes you walk and suddenly the companion stops, he doesn’t enter buildings either, he spends too much time eating corpses and when the companion kills an enemy we unfortunately don’t receive any xp 😉

There is an error i saw that could not load it. “modname/ModInfo.xml does not define a valid non-empty Name (^[0-9a-zA-Z_\-]+$).”

the notification of “Press E for the saddle” stays on the screen forever, i think its a bug
The animal companion could have vehicle like hud to help getting around the jankness. (either to dismiss the animal, maybe have it a small inventory, and change its priority)
The constant animal noises will get annoying, so would like to have a option to mute them or make them very soft or just not make any noises at all.
i find they dont share exp if they get the kill. it might be unbalanced but you do resources to get them in the first place, so i think sharing a portion if they get the kill or if you hit the enemy that they are attacking you get some exp too. thats what i think so far.
i cannot find the whistle item, is it a schematic?
i managed to solve the issue by just putting the folder “‘modname’ v2″with the modinfo.xml out (with no more external folders.)

I am working to have them ironed out and should have a new version for download up soon. I cant get this mod to work. I downloaded the file, extract all, moved to mods folder. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.
Do you have other mods installed, It is possible they could be conflicting with one another. Can you verify if the mod is loading in? You just press f1 when in game and scroll through the logs, look for a message that says “Loaded Mod: Zzz_Animal_Companions_V2 (2.0.0)”
So, is it enough to craft a whistle to have a companion? Can I have several? I think the recipe for a whistle is too cheap (if all you have to do is craft it and whistle to summon the animal).
In my opinion, the recipe should be the easiest for the weakest companion and the hardest for the strongest one, which is probably a zombie wolf or a bear.
Yes for now you only need to craft a whistle to be able to have a companion, In the future I may add a feature that makes it so you need special items to craft the whistles. So for example if you want a dire wolf whistle you may need to kill a dire wolf that drops the special item for the respective whistle. Thank you so much for your feedback by the way!

Also, the pop ups about how to use the saddle seems to never go away for me. Worse, because my wolf was nearby while I was with a trader, pressing E suddenly made me mount the direwolf outside the trader’s area because the wolf was eating a zombie while I was still shopping with the Trader. I hit E to buy/sell items and teleported outside.
Just tried it. The animals are very loud and annoying to hear, the saddle item is broken and is gigantic, the model is still and just hovers over the Direwolf, and then there seems to be no way to disable the saddle so it will spawn on other pets you summon.
I have no idea how to un-summon a pet without removing the mod. There should be a way to dismiss them and dismiss the saddle. I don’t think the saddle should be a separate model that shows up; maybe an invisible or tiny object locked onto the direwolf that you mount rather than an actual model?
The limitation on range for the pet also makes it run at the enemy forever until you get closer so it can attack them. Also, when they eat a zombie corpse, they seem to be locked there and won’t follow you anymore, even if zombies attack you.
Could be really fun and good, but needs a lot of work.

These are all issues I totally agree with and am currently working on especially the saddle situation I know how annoying those pop ups (and the animal noises) are. the consuming the corpse mechanic doesnt seem very purposeful as it doesnt heal the animal.
Thank you for your response! I look forward to future updates because I love the idea for this. Maybe it could be supported in the future with some kind of “Beast-Tamer” talent tree that can be added? Something that adds pet damage, pet health, pet speed, etc.
Well done for this mod 🙂 , if I may say if you could make the animals more realistic in their movements a little more fluid 🙂 and also there is a problem when we get into the helicopter the pets teleport on us and make the vehicles bug

Oh, I love these “pet” mods. I do hope you add more animals, like maybe the wolf or doe. The Summon Animals NPC pack by arramus has most of the other ones covered.
